Undoubtedly one of the best lightweight prospects in the world today, Amru Magomedov always seems to be on the brink of going to the UFC. His coach, Khabib Nurmagomedov, has singled him out as a future UFC champion several years ago.
With six first-round finishes, one of which was against Jumaev when he secured the belt, his most recent victory was the body kick TKO of Alex da Silva in Al Ain in February. Five finishes in five UAEW appearances should, at least on paper, stand him in good stead to be offered a contract on the biggest platform in the world.
But his challenger here has more finishes against more opponents and is desperate for a belt that would be just rewards for a five-year career in the promotion. Martun Mezhlumyan made his debut with us in ’20 where he came close to defeating Bellator & PFL standout Islam Mamedov at UAEW 14 with a technical kickboxing style.
Mezhlumyan’s ever-improving submission game came to fruition with the spectacular triangle choke against Carlos Silva at UAEW28, and his skills ensured he went the distance to take the decision against Duque at UAEW34. He returned very recently this past June and looked in ominous form with a finish of Italo Gomes and wasted little time in his in-cage interview with a call-out of Magomedov.
The two key questions are whether Martun can quickly figure out the timing and angles of Amru’s mercurial striking, or if Amru can outwit the wily and erudite fight IQ of the more-experienced Martun. Either way, this is quite possibly the biggest fight in the history of UAE Warriors.
